Chapter Ten

BELLA

“So you guys want me to hack into the cameras of a possible Russian smuggling front?” Liz verifies, crossing her arms across her chest.

“Well, that’s the gist of it, yes,” Shelby replies.

“Right,” Liz continues. “You know, I really should start charging you guys serious money. I mean, this is interfering with my social time, you know? I’m supposed to be out with friends right now.”

“Look, this is really important,” I inform her, leaning forward.

“Fine,” Liz says, popping another piece of chewing gum into her mouth. She cracks her knuckles and turns to face her computer.

“Where is the third Musketeer anyway?” she asks.

“Who? Seth?” I say.

Shelby frowns. “I haven’t talked to him in a while. He called me the other day, but when I picked up, he didn’t answer. I thought he was just pranking me.”

“Maybe he’s just upset that we kicked him out of the investigation,” I posit.

“Well, Agent Sanders ordered us to do it,” Shelby counters.

“Agent Sanders also ordered us to step down, but we aren’t doing that now are we?” I quip with a grin.

“I guess not,” Shelby says, smiling. “I’ll call him later.”

“Huh?” Liz states.

“What is it?” I enquire.

“There’s an awful lot of security for just a simple factory,” she declares. “I’ll need some time to break through the firewalls of their main computer.”

“Time is something we don’t have,” Shelby mentions. “Every second that passes brings Captain Teddy closer to his death.”

“I can’t hurry this up, Love,” Liz says. “You guys will just have to rely on good, old fashioned police work until I’m done here.”

I open my mouth to reply, but at that moment my phone starts to ring.

“Hello?” I greet as I pick it up.

“Bella? This is Ginger,” a panicked voice greets me and I instantly sit up.

“Ginger, what’s wrong?” I ask. Shelby looks at me confused.

“Is Shelby with you? Look, you can’t tell her anything okay. Just pretend it’s nothing, promise me!” Ginger says.

“We’re trying our best to find the captain,” I say, wondering what the hell is going on. “If there’s anything more that you can remember—”

“You have to come here,” Ginger whispers before I can finish. “I think I might know something that can help you find Teddy. But I don’t want to involve Shelby in this. Everything that happened—it’s all her fault. I don’t think I can bare looking at her right now.”

“Ginger—” I start with a slight hesitation.

“Please, I love Teddy,” she pleads. “I just want him safe. I know what I have to show you might not even be important, but if it can help.”

“Right,” I say, aware that Shelby is listening. “Well, don’t worry. We’ll keep looking for Teddy. We will find him. I’ll see you later, okay?”

I end the call and Shelby raises an eyebrow.

“Ginger,” I notify her. “She just wanted to know if we’ve made any progress.”

“Well, hopefully Liz will be able to pull up the footage we need and we can see where the kidnapper went after he entered that area. It should help us find out where he’s keeping the captain.
